Persian Gaeden
The “Majles Series,” designed and produced by Siavash Sufinejad and Farzaneh Mazrae at Villa Sufia Design Studio, is a limited edition collection of hand knotted silk rugs that serves as an artistic and historical tribute to Iran’s rich cultural heritage. Each rug in this collection narrates stories from the history and way of life of our ancestors, which form the foundation of our present civilization. The narratives range from the Shahnameh (the Persian epic written by Ferdowsi) to traditional games like polo and wrestling, to scenes of school, baths, folk ceremonies, respect for plants and animals, and even the arrival of religions in the East These stories are depicted using traditional visual storytelling techniques seen in Iranian coffee house ( Ghahve khane painting ) and miniature paintings.
One of the series’ standout features is the use of vertical perspective, a method used to highlight the importance of specific characters within the composition. As in miniature paintings, significant figures like Imams or kings are depicted larger and more prominent than others. This authority perspective emphasizes their importance, giving them visual dominance, while less significant characters are shown smaller and further away. Thus, the rugs maintain a delicate balance between artistic tradition and storytelling.
The Persian cat, colored in Iranian turquoise, ( Persian blue ) plays a key role as the narrator of the stories, symbolizing Iran itself. The cat moves from one rug to the next, ultimately finding peace in an Iranian garden after journeying through all the historical periods. This animation breathes life into the stories, connecting one rug’s narrative to the next.
Pieces from this collection have been exhibited in prestigious galleries both in Iran and internationally, as well as in museums. The collection has also won the award for Best Collection at an international NFT exhibition.
